The aim of our project was to create a product and system that increases the feasibility of biogas use in future smart cities. We focused on communities in the city of Eindhoven and how to make this system as user-friendly as possible. The aim was to incorporate the idea of caring about food waste and caring for the environment with a sense of community, with the help of incentives from biogas production. We want everyone to enjoy using the system and its products, and for it to fit seamlessly into today's society. It must help to raise awareness of our impact on the environment and that, with minimal effort and a well-designed system, you can start to reduce that impact. We came up with AMVRO, a bin system where you could put your personal food waste and it would be turned into biogas. Each time you deposit your waste, you can make a donation to one of your favourite charities. This would be paid for out of the profits from the sale of the biogas.
This was such a fun project. In our first year as industrial designers, when we knew almost nothing about how to run a design project, we jumped head first into this challenge. I learnt about different key elements of a design process, such as brainstorming methods or the importance of documentation. Every one of us learned a lot and we had a blast as a team.
What I enjoyed most about this project was creating the video. I had never worked with Adobe Premiere Pro or animated in Procreate or Adobe After Effects before, but it was part of my personal development plan, so I took it upon myself to make the video. And I loved doing it. I spent so much time on it because I really couldn't stop working on it.
